It can be quite intimidating trying to decide on the best hosting solution for your business. There are so many options to choose from. From basic shared hosting accounts to fully fledged dedicated servers and everything in between. That is often why businesses stick to the tried and tested solution, i.e. shared hosting accounts.
Shared hosting accounts are undoubtedly the most affordable and most popular way to host a website, but shared hosting does have its shortcomings. The biggest shortcoming is that you generally cannot install software on a shared hosting account. I'm not talking about things like Wordpress and other Scripts that can run from your public home directory as a normal script. I am specifically referring to installing software applications that run on the underlying Operating System as its own service.
For example, Rocket.Chat is a fantastic replacement for a chat solution, but it can only be installed as root and not hosted on a shared hosting account. There are free alternatives, like Hipchat (UPDATE: Hipchat has now been discontinued and is merging with Slack) or many of the other chat services. The problem, however, is that you either generally have to pay for the service or you will have limited functionality.
Would it not be better if you could host your own chat server? Well you can, if you have the right hosting solution. Rocket Chat is what we use over at Namhost, and I can say without a doubt that it's right up there with the likes of Hipchat. Plus, it's completely free. But unfortunately, you would not be able to install Rocket Chat on a share hosting account. You would need a hosting solution where you have root access that allows you to install software.
There are only two hosting options that give you root access:
- Dedicated Servers
- Virtual Private Servers
Dedicated server are extremely expensive and 9 times out of 10, way too much power for most users needs. That means dedicated servers are easily wasted resources. This is where Virtual Private Servers shine! They give you all the benefits of a Dedicated Server, but at the fraction of a cost. Of course, you also have less processing power and memory. But even the smallest VPS should be big enough to host a wide range of applications.
By changing your mindset to having a VPS as a core component of your company, you will quickly realise you can easily host a wide variety of services on your own VPS which can reduce costs and provide you with more control and peace of mind.
